Returning for its third year, the ‘2024 Phuket Spartan Trifecta Weekend and Hurricane Heat 12HR Presented by Blue Tree Phuket’ saw participants compete in a series of gruelling, obstacle-themed challenges across the two days.
The series of obstacle races varied in distance and difficulty, ranging from 3 miles to marathon distances, with obstacles such as off-road running, mud wading, zip-lining, net climbing and wall climbing.
This year also saw the launch of the ‘Young Spartans Running Race’ which was enthusiasatically embraced by children between the ages of 4-14, as well as the 12-Hour Hurricane Heat, which was staged for the first time in Thailand.
The event was launched at 7am on Saturday (Nov 9) by Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai, who was joined by: Thanawut Petchchara, Director of the Phuket office of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT); Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT); Boonterm Wimonphan, Deputy Mayor of Cherng Tala, in addition to selected representatives from various pubic and private sector organisations, including official partner bodies supporting the event.
Vice Governor Samawit explained in his opening remarks that the event was organised in collaboration with the Phuket office of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and Run Rio Thailand.
Phuket was honoured to welcome so many international athletes to compete in the event, which organisers hope can become established as the leading event of its kind in the ASEAN region, he added.
It is also a very important sports tourism related event that further helps raise the profile of Phuket, while generating income for local businesses and the province. With over 5,000 athletes competing and the same number attending in a variety of capacities related to the event, an estimated B300 million overall spend was anticipated across the weekend, Vice Governor Samawit said.
