The decision was made at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall this week, chaired by Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai and attended by key officials, including Puangphaka Chaowai, Chief of the Phuket Provincial office of the Ministry of Culture; and Wasan Sangsin, Director of the Phuket branch of the National Office of Buddhism.

Also present were Phra Khru Suwan Phutthaphiban, Abbot of Thalang District, and representatives of the Abbots of Kathu and Mueang Phuket Districts.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has long demonstrated dedication to religious and cultural preservation, actively supporting and promoting Buddhist activities across the country, said an official report of the meeting.

In honour of her milestone birthday on Apr 2, the Sangha Supreme Council approved a nationwide initiative encouraging temples to organise summer ordinations and Silajarini ordinations.

The ceremonies, taking place from March through May, aim to instill moral values in children and young people while honoring the Princess’s contributions, the report said.

Under the directive, provincial Buddhist authorities have coordinated with local temples to organise ordination activities.

In Phuket, six temples will host events as part of this initiative: Wat Thepwanaram (Wat Manik) in Srisoonthorn; Wat Nai Tu (Wat Kathu) and Wat Anuphasakrittharam (Wat Ket Ho) in Kathu; Wat Si Supharam (Wat Mai Luang Pu Supha) and Wat Latthiwanaram (Wat Tai) in Chalong; and Wat Thepnimit in Wichit.

Among them, Wat Latthiwanaram has been chosen as the primary temple to lead the project in Phuket.

The activities provide an opportunity for young participants to learn Buddhist teachings, practice moral discipline and contribute to their communities, said the official report of the meeting.

The programme also allows them to express gratitude to their parents and elders through religious practice and charitable deeds.

Officials at the meeting emphasised that the project aims to strengthen national values, promote ethical conduct and sustain the country’s rich cultural heritage.

By engaging in these ceremonies, Phuket residents and participants nationwide will collectively honour the HRH Sirindhorn while reinforcing Thailand’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions, the report concluded.
