Phuket City Municipality confirmed it will cancel its annual Loy Krathong celebrations this year. However, residents will still be able to take part in the traditional floating of krathongs at the pond in front of Suan Luang Rama IX Park, where a simple venue will be provided.
Wichit Municipality also announced a full cancellation of its planned Loy Krathong Festival 2025. While all entertainment activities are called off, the municipality will make available a site for people to float krathongs at Ban Bo Rae (Khlong Mudong) in Moo 6, Wichit.
Kathu Municipality likewise confirmed the cancellation of its celebrations, while Chalong Municipality has cancelled all entertainment activities, contests and performances previously planned from Nov 3-5 at Wat Latthiwanaram (Wat Tai). Residents may still float krathongs at the temple in accordance with tradition.
In Rawai, the municipality announced the full cancellation of this year’s event in remembrance of Her Majesty The Queen Mother.
Karon Municipality has also adjusted its plans, cancelling its ‘Nang Noppamas Chamleng 2025’ beauty contest, krathong competitions and cultural shows. The public will still be able to float krathongs at Nong Han Public Park.
Ratsada Municipality will hold a toned-down traditional event on Nov 5 at Phuket Rajabhat University. The programme will begin with a ceremony to pay respects to Her Majesty The Queen Mother, followed by traditional krathong floating at four designated sites. However, all contests and musical performances have been cancelled.
Pa Khlok Municipality announced that its planned ‘Chuan Chom Chan, Loy Krathong, Nong Kwai’ project has been cancelled. The event, which was to highlight local agricultural traditions, will instead be replaced by a simple venue for traditional krathong floating. The municipality also asked attendees to dress modestly and in subdued colours befitting the national mourning period.
Srisoonthorn Municipality announced it has changed the theme of its event, ‘Light of Thainess, Shining @ Srisoonthorn,’ to a solemn format focused on traditional activities. Decorations will be set up for krathong floating, but the stage parade, Miss Noppamas contest, cooking shows, food stalls and all entertainment activities have been cancelled.
In Cherng Talay, Mayor Sunirun Rachataphruek confirmed that Loy Krathong will proceed at the reservoir behind the municipal office on Soi Cherng Talay 4, but without music, food stalls or contests.
Patong is the only municipality to confirm that it will proceed with its event as planned, though with significant adjustments. Mayor Chalita Maneesri said the Loy Krathong celebrations at Patong Beach will retain their traditional elements but without fireworks and with minimal music.
“The Loy Krathong festival in Patong will continue as it is a long-held tradition. However, we will reduce entertainment activities to mourn Her Majesty The Queen Mother,” Mayor Chalita said.
Across the island, municipalities have emphasised that the spirit of Loy Krathong – a time to express gratitude to the Goddess of Water and let go of misfortune – will continue in a respectful and subdued manner, in keeping with the national mourning period.
