The crabs were released at the Hin Luk Diao Local Fishing Pier in Mai Khao on Tuesday (Mar 25) at an event organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) in collaboration with the Phuket Provincial Fisheries Office.

The opening ceremony was presided over by PPAO President Rewat Areerob, alongside, Phuket Provincial Fisheries Chief Prayut Rattanawon.

The event saw enthusiastic participation from government officials, community leaders, local fishermen and residents, said an official report of the event.

The initiative has threefold aims, to Restore and enhance the abundance of coastal marine life; encourage community participation in natural resource conservation; and support local fishermen’s livelihoods and generate income.

The crabs were released into several key areas with suitable ecosystems, including Baan Yamu, Baan Lao, Baan Laem Sai, Baan Dan Yid and Baan Hin Luk Diao, to ensure their growth and sustainability, explained the report.

During the ceremony, Mr Rewat emphasised the importance of conserving aquatic resources for long-term use.

He highlighted the role of the community in preserving marine life and underscored the PPAO’s commitment to fostering sustainable fishing practices.

Funded by the PPAO and executed by the Phuket Provincial Fisheries Office, the project is part of a broader effort to develop and sustain local fishing careers.

Beyond increasing marine biodiversity, the release of sea crabs serves as a reminder to the community of the importance of protecting coastal resources for future generations and maintaining a stable source of income for local fishermen, the report said.
