Phuket readies to pass Senator selection to Bangkok

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannrat will tomorrow (June 16) lead the Provincial Selection Committee in deciding which candidates will be presented to the national selection committee in Bangkok in order to determine who will serve as the next Senator for Phuket.

The Provincial Selection Committee will convene at the Phuket Auditorium building, located next to Phuket Provincial Hall, at 9am.

In addition to Governor Sophon, the committee to select the senatorial candidate finalists comprises: 

  • Suwit Suriyawong, Mueang Phuket District Chief 
  • Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum, Phuket Provincial Police Commander 
  • Wuttichai Bamrungrat, originally from Chiang Mai currently serving as Chief of the Phuket branch Department of Local Administration (DOLA)
  • Wikrom Jaktee, Phuket Provincial Administrative Chief (Palad)
  • Uthai Thabthong, chief of the Phuket branch of the Department of Provincial Administration (DOPA)
  • Orapin Acheevasuk, Director of Phuket office of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT Phuket)

The finalist, or finalists, chosen by the Provincial Selection Committee will be presented to the National Selection Committee in Bangkok, which is to review the final candidates from all areas across the country on June 26.

The results are due to be announced on July 2, declaring the 200 senators to serve for one term of five years.

Phuket has cleared its first round in selecting candidates for consideration by the provincial committee with the district-level selection committees last Sunday (June 9) reducing the original 315 candidates to just 116.

Of the 315 “applications”, Group 11 and Group 14 were the most popular, with each category receiving 44 applicants.

Group 11 is the ‘Group for business operators or professionals in tourism. This includes tourism business operators, tour guides, business operators or hotel employees, or others of the same nature’. Group 14. Group for Women (and women’s rights)

Group 3 and Group 17 each received 34 ‘applications’. Group 3. Group for Education. This includes people who are or were teachers, researchers, educational institution administrators, education personnel or others in the same manner. Group 17. Group for Civil Society groups, public benefit organization groups or others of the same nature.

The third most-popular category was Group 20, the ‘Other Groups’ category, which received 30 applications

Of note, there were zero ‘applications’ for Group 18, Group 18, the ‘Group for Mass Media, Literary creators or others of the same nature’.

Among the candidates still in the running for selection are the likes of well-known tourism industry leader Sarayut Mallam, and long with Thaweesak Boonyong, Supachai Srisawat and Niphon Ekwanich.
