Phuket readies slew of issues to present to PM Srettha

PHUKET: Phuket officials are preparing to present to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin a slew of critical issues facing residents on the island and the island’s tourism industry, including delays with major government projects, Phang Nga airport, water resource issues and the state of the island’s taxi services.

Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuwan led a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall held yesterday (Sept 21) to determine which issues to present to the prime minister, who is expected to visit Phuket next week.

An official report of the meeting noted only that PM Srettha was expected to visit Phuket “by the end of the month”, yet a post earlier this week by Phuket Info Center, which operates under the Phuket branch of the Ministry of Interior, marked that PM Srettha was expected to arrive in Phuket next Friday (Sept 29).

The meeting yesterday was attended by a host of leading Phuket figures, including representatives of key government offices on the island, such as the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO), and leading tourism figures. Among them was Sarayuth Mallam, currently serving as Vice President of Government Relations at the Phuket Tourist Association.

“I ask all agencies that all information to be presented adheres to the required principles, is concise and to the point, and tells what they want the government to push forward,” Vice Governor Amnuay said.

“The order of presentation will be assigned to the private sector who will present the information to the Prime Minister first,” he added.

On this occasion, the meeting discussed the preparation of information. To present to the Prime At the meeting it was agreed to present the following issues:

  • Phuket Provincial Mass Transit System Project, Phase 1 (Phuket Airport - Chalong Circle) and Phase 2, Tha Noon (in Phang Nga) - Mueang Mai
  • Muang Mai - Koh Kaew - Kathu Expressway Project
  • Kathu - Patong Expressway Project (Patong Tunnel)
  • Construction project to increase traffic lanes on Route 4027, from Baan Para (Pa Khlok) - Mueang Mai (Thepkrasattri)
  • Interchange construction project at the intersection of Route 402 (Thepkrasattri Rd) and Route 4027 (namely te ’Heroines Monument’ intersection)
  • Airport Project No. 2 (Phang Nga), and Taxi concession fees at Phuket International Airport
  • Amendments to Ministerial Regulations No. 4 (1981) issued in accordance with the Land Transport Act 1979 (more taxi related issues)
  • Issuing laws to enforce a passenger registration system via cooperation and integration between the Marine Department and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES)
  • System for forcing shops that rent vehicles to check the driver’s license of the person renting the vehicle
  • Taxi problems (create justice by enforcing laws to modernize taxi laws/creating options for tourists)
  • Water management in Phuket province and the group of southern provinces on the Andaman coast
