The announcement came at the meeting of the Road Safety Management Center Committee yesterday (Dec 6), chaired by Deputy Minister of the Interior Songsak Thongsri.
The meeting, held via electronic media, brought together provincial governors, law enforcement and other key agencies to finalize a comprehensive 2025 accident prevention plan, said an official report of the meeting.
The initiative aligns with Thailand’s broader goal of positioning 2025 as the ‘Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism Year’, emphasising safety and accessibility for tourists, Mr Sonsak said.
Deputy Minister Songsak highlighted the importance of safety in boosting tourism, stating, “Tourism depends on accessibility, convenience, satisfaction and safety.”
Mr Songsak explained that key measures included:
- Strengthening road safety mechanisms at local levels with community involvement.
- Proactive risk reduction strategies targeting people, roads, vehicles, and environmental factors.
- Strict enforcement of traffic laws by local police.
- Improved accident data management and analysis to prevent repeat incidents.
- Building a culture of safety, including 100% helmet use for motorcyclists.
“The goal is to reduce Thailand’s road accident fatality rate to 12 deaths per 100,000 people by 2027,” Mr Songsak noted.
Phuket’s road-safety center will oversee the campaign during the intensive ‘Seven Days of Danger’ period, DDPM Phuket Chief Mr Sopon said.
Authorities will enforce strict measures, including heightened road safety checks and public awareness campaigns. The initiative builds on prior efforts, such as the recent National Seminar on Road Safety and activities marking the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, he added.
With the influx of tourists expected during the holiday season, authorities aim to ensure safe and enjoyable travel experiences, aligning with Thailand’s vision for a tourism-driven economy in 2025, the official report noted.
