Phuket Rajabhat University President Asst Prof Dr Hiran Prasarnkarn and Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, Chairman of the university’s Promotion Committee, warmly welcomed a diverse audience that included government officials, university leaders, students and esteemed guests, including Governor Sophon’s wife, Ms Busadee, who is currently President of the Phuket branch of the Red Cross Society of Thailand.

In his opening remarks, Asst Prof Dr Hiran highlighted the fair’s role in fostering education, cultural preservation and community collaboration. He noted that the event serves as a vital platform for promoting regional culture and strengthening ties between the university, local agencies and the broader community.

Governor Suwannarat emphasised the economic significance of the fair, particularly for Phuket’s tourism sector, which continues to be the province’s main economic driver.

He cited Phuket’s record-breaking tourism revenue in 2024 and expressed optimism for continued growth in 2025 as the province aims to position itself as a premium destination for quality tourists.

A standout feature of the fair was the performance of ‘Aphon Yonya’, which celebrated the heritage of the Peranakan ‘Kebaya’ dress, recently recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The performance was praised for showcasing local culture while bolstering Phuket’s tourism appeal, said an official report of the event.

Mr Kongsak, representing the university’s Promotion Committee, outlined the event’s objectives, including supporting local products, showcasing faculty achievements and raising funds for the university’s development.

He highlighted the integration of faculty activities and exhibitions to drive Phuket’s economy and enhance the university’s mission.

Of note, Mr Kongsak is currently Vice Chairman of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce. He has previously served as President of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce and as President of the Thai Hotels Association’s Southern Thailand chapter.

The fair, running until Jan 26, features over 240 OTOP booths from across the country, cultural performances, academic competitions, and exhibitions of innovative works from various faculties.

Organizers expressed gratitude to the many contributors who helped bring the event to life, noting its dual impact on promoting Phuket’s economy and tourism while advancing educational opportunities and university development.
