Wichit Police confirmed the incident occurred at about 3:06pm in a room at the Andaman Apartment complex in Moo 4, opposite the bus terminal on Chao Fa East Rd.
Police initially reported that two people were injured in the shooting, but later confirmed that one of them, Pol Lt Prajak Thahanthai, Deputy Inspector with the Phuket Provincial Police Investigation Division, had died from his injuries.
The identity of the other victim and the perpetrator have not yet been released.
Officers from Wichit Police Station, led by Superintendent Pol Col Somsak Thongkliang, along with 20 patrol officers, rushed to the scene and secured the area while investigators began gathering evidence.
Also present at the scene this afternoon was Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum,
Pol Lt Col Narong Muangduang is leading the investigation.
Police have not yet confirmed the motive behind the shooting or whether any suspects have been taken into custody.
