The ‘Safer Road Connect’ project was officially launched this morning (Aug 6) at The Pago Design Hotel in Ratsada, with Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum presiding over the ceremony.

The initiative, introduced as a pilot project, leverages digital applications to manage and monitor traffic violations through a centralised system that links vehicle data across multiple sectors.

Speaking at the event, Pol Col Kasidin Chaikratok, Director of the Phuket Provincial Police Administrative Division, said the project responds to the growing road safety challenges in Phuket ‒ a province that he noted faces rising traffic volumes, complex travel patterns due to tourism and frequent risky road behaviour.

“Data from the Thai Accident Centre and the provincial database show the scale of the problem. This project supports both the national digital government policy and Thailand’s broader road safety strategy,” Pol Col Kasidin said.

The system uses vehicle licence plate data to track driving behaviour, record traffic violations and create a comprehensive database that can be used to issue warnings, analyse trends and enhance enforcement.

The project aims to develop a seamless, multi-agency process for traffic enforcement and road safety management, integrating data between government departments, educational institutions and healthcare providers. The collaborative model will allow officials to analyse incident trends more effectively and implement targeted interventions to reduce road crashes, Pol Col Kasidin explained.

So far, three government agencies, three educational institutions and one hospital have joined the pilot programme. All parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pledging to actively support and promote road safety measures through the new system.

Pol Maj Gen Sinlert emphasised the significance of the project for Phuket, which continues to experience growth in both vehicle numbers and tourist arrivals.

“Road safety is a critical issue in our province. The ‘Safer Road Connect’ project is a vital step in addressing this challenge,” he said. “By using digital tools, we can monitor traffic violations in real-time and analyse high-risk behaviours more accurately, which will help improve law enforcement.”

Pol Maj Gen Sinlert praised the collective effort of participating organisations, adding that the success of the initiative relied on strong cooperation between public, private, and educational sectors.

“This is just the beginning. With continued collaboration and technological development, we hope to see lasting improvements in road user behaviour and a safer environment for both residents and visitors,” he said.

The pilot phase of the ‘Safer Road Connect’ project will be used to assess the system’s performance and potential for expansion across other areas of Phuket and beyond, he concluded.
