Phuket provincial officials have ramped up its efforts to prevent and respond to flooding, storms and mudslides after heavy rainfall caused localised flooding in several areas, said an official report of the meeting, held at Phuket Provincial Hall.
The session was chaired by Wichit Sutthaso, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket), and brought together key agencies for the “first official meeting of the 2025 flood response working group”.
The downpours yesterday triggered flooding in multiple locations, including:
Mueang Phuket District: In front of Dara Hotel, Wichit School, Suan Thai Village, Wiset Rd, Chalong Circle, Bang Khanathi Village, Nai Harn Mosque and Sai Yuan Village in Rawai.
Kathu District: Kamala Kindergarten, Simon Cabaret area, Patong-Nanai Rd, Kata Por Piang Market and SuperCheap Karon.
According to the report, no flooding was reported in Thalang District.
The Meteorological Department reported that Thailand is expected to officially enter the rainy season in the second half of May, bringing heightened risks of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides in vulnerable areas.
In response, the provincial command centre has tasked a multidisciplinary working group with monitoring weather data, managing water flow and coordinating local emergency responses.
Participants reviewed existing emergency plans, updated the structure of the flood response team, and heard forecasts from the Meteorological Department, noted the report.
Local agencies also reported on preparedness measures, such as inspecting water pumps, preparing sandbags and deploying personnel to high-risk areas, the report added.
Phuket City Municipality confirmed that all water pumps are functioning at full capacity and emergency resources are in place. Similar preparations have been made in Kathu and Thalang districts, with staff on standby for immediate response.
Officials at the meeting highlighted the importance of “constant vigilance” by district-level command centres and local emergency operation centres.
All agencies have been instructed to provide regular updates and stand ready to assist residents throughout the rainy season, the report concluded.
