Komon Dumlak, Chairman of the Islamic Committee of Phuket, presided over the opening ceremony. Also in attendance were Pol Col Salan Santisasanakul, Superintendent of Sakhu Police Station, members of the provincial Islamic committee and Muslim communities from Phuket and the three southern border provinces.

Ashura, a traditional Islamic observance marked on the 10th day of Muharram – the first month in the Islamic calendar – is a time of reflection, remembrance and community. One of the key highlights of the event was the stirring of ‘Ashure’, a traditional dessert made from a mixture of grains, beans, fruits, and spices.

According to Mr Komon, the origins of the Ashura tradition date back to the time of the Prophet Noah. As told in Islamic belief, following a great flood that caused widespread devastation and food shortages, Noah instructed survivors to combine their remaining food to create a single dish. This act of unity and resilience gave rise to the Ashura dessert and the associated tradition of communal stirring.

“The stirring of Ashure is more than just making dessert,” Dr. Komon said. “It is a symbolic act of unity, generosity and the spirit of overcoming hardship together.”

A highlight of the event was the Ashura stirring competition, where community teams showcased their skills and spirit. The Sabas team claimed first prize, while the Quality team took second, both receiving cash awards.

Organisers announced plans to expand the event next year. The 2nd Phuket Central Mosque Friendship Ashura event in 2026 is expected to be even larger, with increased prize money and wider participation, said an official report of the event.

The event not only preserved a treasured cultural tradition but also strengthened bonds across communities through shared values of cooperation and compassion, the report noted.
