The event marked a significant milestone for the industry, with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat present.
The gathering witnessed a unified pledge from marine industry operators to actively tackle safety concerns, cultivating a conducive and secure atmosphere for marine tourism in Phuket.
A pivotal accomplishment was marked with the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between key stakeholders. The document outlined the terms and understanding essential for ‘United Commitment to Improved Marine Safety’. The scope of the commitment encompasses crucial areas such as drug testing, life jacket requirements, comprehensive boat crew training and rescue planning.
“This marks a crucial initial stage in the planned transformations to the industry’s approach to maritime safety. Acknowledging the significance of a harmonised strategy towards marine safety, this event marked the inaugural occasion where such a diverse spectrum of marine industry stakeholders were united through coordination and collaboration,” said a release after the event.
Shaun Stenning, owner of 5 Star Marine, expressed his thoughts on the event, stating, "The purpose of the event was to have the whole industry come together to create a wave of change by committing to a new safety standard in Phuket, endorsed by the Provincial Government. I am delighted that everyone pulled together from all walks of the marine industry in order to show their support for future safety."
The collective initiative aims not only to address immediate concerns but also to establish a framework for ongoing collaboration and continuous improvement in marine safety standards.
“By fostering a culture of responsibility and adherence to best practices, the marine industry in Phuket endeavours to create a safer and more secure environment for both operators and visitors alike,” the release noted.
The push to improve marine tour and boat safety was spurred by the tour speedboat crash at Koh Maithon on Dec 31 that killed a 5-year-old Russian girl and seriously injured five others.
Governor Sophon last week ordered the creation of a ‘Phuket Province Maritime Tourist Security Command Center’ overseen by the Royal Thai Navy to ensure that marine and tour boat operators comply with safety protocols and requirements.
