The day’s activities began at 7am in the Mahisorn Phakdi Auditorium, where a Buddhist chanting and alms-giving ceremony was held to honour Queen Sirikit. Phra Sri Wachirakhun, abbot of Kathu District, along with the abbot of Wat Si Supharam in Chalong, led the monastic rites, while Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat presided over the proceedings.
He was joined by his wife, Ms Busadee, who serves as the President of the Phuket branch of the Red Cross Society, along with Phuket Vice Governors Adul Chuthong, Samawit Suphanphai and Suwit Phansengiam, as well as senior officials from government and private agencies and members of the public.
The morning ceremony provided an opportunity for citizens from all walks of life to express their loyalty and gratitude for the Queen Mother’s lifelong dedication to the Thai people.
In the evening, the focus returned to the Mahisorn Phakdi Auditorium for a formal tribute and candle-lighting ceremony. More than 90 organisations from across the province took part in the 5:30pm laying of gold and silver ‘Phan Phum’ (พานพุ่ม), a traditional gesture of respect in royal ceremonies.
At precisely 7:19pm, Governor Sophon led participants in paying homage before a portrait of the Queen Mother, presenting wreaths, and offering incense and candles. The ceremony included the lighting of candles to offer auspicious blessings, accompanied by the playing of the Royal Anthem.
Candle lanterns were then distributed, and the gathering joined in singing ‘Praise to theMother of Thailand’, followed by three renditions of ‘Long Live the King’, symbolising unity and loyalty to the monarchy.
Phuket officials said the events, held on Mother’s Day, reflected the province’s deep respect and enduring gratitude towards the Queen Mother, whose grace and kindness have touched the lives of Thai people for decades.
