The Buddhist ceremony, which began at 7:30am, was led by Phra Si Wachirakhun, the abbot of Kathu District and Wat Siri Supharam. Governor Sophon Suwannarat presided over the event on behalf of the laity.
A large gathering of dignitaries and residents participated in the event, including the Governor’s wife, Mrs Busadee, who as the Governor’s wife serves as the President of the Phuket branch of the Red Cross Society of Thailand and as President of the Phuket branch of Interior Ministry Housewives Association
Other notables joining the ceremony included Phuket Vice Governors Ronnarong Tipsiri and Samawit Suphanphai. Representatives from government agencies, the judiciary, the military, police, and the public also joined the activities in a show of unity and reverence.
The ceremony served as an opportunity for the people of Phuket to express their deep gratitude and respect for the late monarch, whose reign was marked by extraordinary dedication to the welfare of his people, said an official report of the event.
The Buddhist ceremony was followed by a formal ceremony at the Phuket Auditorium, located at the Phuket Provincial Hall complex, to honour and express gratitude for the great kindness of King Bhumibol.
During the formal ceremony, which began at 8:30am, representatives from various organizations ‒ including government bodies, local administrations and private agencies ‒ placed ’Phan Phum’ (พานพุ่ม) in front of a portrait of King Bhumibol.
Governor Sophon then paid his respects, laid a ’Phan Phum’ and delivered a speech commemorating the late king’s immense contributions and grace.
The participants collectively paid their respects before the ceremony concluded.
