This year marks the 239th anniversary of ‘Thalang Victory Day’, with Minister of Culture Sermsak Phongpanich present last night for the celebrations at Thalang Memorial Field (also called ‘Thalang Victory Field’) in Baan Riang, Tambon Thepkasattri.
Also present for the occasion were Phuket Vice Governor Norasak Suksomboon and other high-ranking Phuket officials, along with Rewat Areerob, President of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO).
The annual event at Thalang Victory Field is organised by the PPAO each year.
Thousands of people turned out for the extravaganza, especially the light and sound show and the historical drama recounting the tale of Phuket’s Heroines, Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, forever remembered in Phuket and honoured by the Heroines Monument on Thepkrasattri Rd.
The celebrations are held each year to honour the descendants of the two Heroines and “those who performed heroic deeds with courage, sacrificed life and blood, to protect the land of Phuket”, Governor Sophon noted.
The Heroines Festival will continue at Thalang Victory Field tonight and tomorrow night (Mar 15), the final night of the event.
In addition to the historical drama and light and sound show, which includes a fireworks display, many people also turn out at the event for the hundreds of local vendors set up to serve a wide range of local dishes and delicacies, and a host of other activities held as part of the celebrations showcasing local ways of life during the period.
