Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat presented certificates to formally recognise the achievement at a ceremony held at Phuket Provincial Hall on Christmas Day (Dec 25).

The Raksa Food project, a collaboration between the Phuket Provincial office of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, CSR Phuket Center and the Phuket branch of the Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Foundation, focuses on reducing food waste by redirecting surplus food to vulnerable groups, including low-income individuals and disaster victims.

The initiative also emphasises fostering community engagement and promoting sustainable practices, said an official report of the event.

Since its inception, the Raksa Food project has expanded to encompass more than 60 communities, aiding over 100,000 people annually. It serves as a model for effective food surplus management, integrating social welfare with environmental sustainability.

The Cherng Talay OrBorTor and Baan Haad Surin Community were recognised for their exemplary efforts in implementing the project between October and December 2024. The two organisations demonstrated exceptional commitment to reducing food waste, fostering a culture of environmental care, and building a sustainable society, the report said.

The ceremony aimed not only to celebrate these achievements but also to inspire other communities in Phuket and across Thailand to adopt similar practices. By addressing food waste and promoting sharing, the project delivers both social and environmental benefits, setting a precedent for nationwide replication, the report added.

Governor Sophon praised the model communities, noting that their efforts serve as a “beacon of hope and innovation” in creating a more sustainable and equitable society.
