Held at Chaloem Phra Kiat Park in Phuket Old Town with a 9:30pm start, the event incorporated a 3.6 kilometre fun run and a 10.5km mini marathon, with the latter split into male and female age-specific competition categories.
Commemerative shirts and medals were given to everyone who crossed the finish line while trophies were awarded to the top five finishers in each age category of the fun run and both male and female categories of the mini marathon.
Cash prizes were also distributed in each age category in the men’s and women’s mini marathon, with B3,000 for first place, B2,000 for second place and B1,000 for third place although official reports made no mention in relation to the names of the top finishers.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat was on hand to officially open the race, joined by Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkhanapilas, selected government officials, local residents and tourists.
Governor Sophon explained that the event was held to encourage increased exercise and activity among local residents which will in turn lead to a healthier lifestyle.
The event similarly also helped promote Phuket province as a sports tourism destination of choice which will help boost the local economy, the Governor added.
All proceeds from the event once relevant expenses have been deducted will be donated to the Nakhon Phuket Care Center fund, Governor Sophon confirmed.
