With the heavy rain continuing to fall into this morning (June 30), many parts of the island have been brought to a stand still or severely hampered due to torrential floods that are waiting to be drained.

Water flowing from mountains and hillsides across much of the island has also been significant and contributed to the overall situation, particularly in areas that have seen land moved and trees felled due to heavy construction work, such as in Cherng Talay.

The main traffic light area near the entrance to the Blue Tree complex in Cherng Talay experienced serious flooding with the road almost impassable to certain vehicles while the area near Cherng Talay Police Station and the Porto shopping complex was also hit hard.

Similarly, the areas around Loch Palm golf course in Kathu saw water streaming from the nearby mountains at a significant rate which flooded local villages and parked cars and prompted officials to come to assist. Roads in this area, at time of press, were unpassable, according to officials.

There were also reports of floods in excess of 1 metre deep along the main road in Kamala with local villages heavily impacted and homes flooded.

Similar disruptions have been reported in Patong, Chalong, Koh Kaew and along Thepkrasattri Rd, including around the Heroines Monument.

While the downpour appears to have eased somewhat, predictions state that rain fall will increase tomorrow in the Andaman region by 60% so extra caution is urged.

Sophon Thongsai from the Phuket Province Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centre called on residents to cooperate and not take to the roads unless absolutely necessary while the floods persist.
