Joining the opening ceremony were Minister of Industry  Ekkanat Promphan, Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) President Rewat Areerob, along with provincial executives, government officials, local leaders and a large number of attendees from the public.

Mr. Rewat highlighted the significance of the annual event, which honours the bravery of Phuket’s famed heroines, Thao Thep Krasattri and Thao Sri Soonthorn, who led the defense of Thalang against Burmese marauders in 1785.

The commemoration, known as ‘Thalang Victory Day’, is observed on March 13 each year and also serves to promote Phuket’s rich cultural heritage and tourism industry.

The three-day event, running from March 13-15, features a variety of attractions, including historical performances, traditional lifestyle exhibitions, booths showcasing local products, and tributes to Thalang’s historical figures.

Each night, visitors can witness the impressive light and sound shows and engaging reenactments at the Thalang Memorial.

Deputy Prime Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga emphasised the event’s role in uniting Phuket’s residents to celebrate their history and cultural identity, reinforcing the province’s status as a key center of Thai heritage.

Earlier yesterday morning, Governor Sophon Suwanarat, along with representatives from the judiciary, military, police and various sectors in Phuket, led a wreath-laying ceremony at the Heroines Monument.

At 9am, Governor Sophon led officials and participants in another wreath-laying ceremony at the Thalang Victory Memorial to honour the Heroines and those who fought alongside them.

Puangphaka Chaowwai, Chief of the Phuket office of the Ministry of Culture, also took part in the event, leading Cultural Office staff in their ceremonial duties, which included the traditional flag-raising ceremony.
