Phuket Governor launches ‘final push’ ahead of provincial elections

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat today (Jan 28) officially inaugurated what officials have called the “final push” for the upcoming election of members and the president of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) to be held this Saturday (Feb 1).

The event today, dubbed the election ‘Big Day’, was organised by the Phuket office of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT Phuket) and the PPAO.

During the ceremony, Akarawat Sirithanthanakorn, PPAO Secretary and the PPAO’s Director of Elections, welcomed the governor and provided a detailed overview of election preparations. 

Mr Akarawat confirmed that there were just three candidates for the post of PPAO President, and 58 candidates vying for seats on the PPAO Council.

There are 314,408 eligible voters in the election for the president; and 307,317 eligible voters in the election for the council seats.

There will be 392 polling stations set up across the island for the election, with (230 in Mueang District, 106 in Thalang District and 56 in Kathu District. The polling stations will be open from 8am to 5pm on election day.

Mr Akkrawat also highlighted efforts to train polling station committees, prepare election equipment and coordinate with relevant agencies ‒ such as electricity, security and communications ‒ to ensure a smooth electoral process.

ECT Phuket Director Orapin Achiwasuk emphasised that the main purpose of the event today was to raise awareness about the importance of voting and to encourage eligible voters to actually vote in the election.

In his address, Governor Sophon stressed the importance of democratic participation.

“This activity reflects cooperation across all sectors to promote democracy and encourage voters to exercise their rights honestly, transparently and without vote-buying,” he said.  

The governor also urged residents to cast their votes at their registered polling stations on Saturday.

“I invite all Phuket residents to join in selecting capable representatives to govern our province,” he added.

The ceremony concluded with the release of a public relations vehicle parade aimed at raising awareness and encouraging voter turnout.
