The governor presented certificates of appreciation to Benchawan ‘Nong Rinda’ Kanphai and Siriporn Ditsawan, both Mathayom 6 students, at a ceremony held at Phuket Provincial Hall yesterday (Jan 29).

The recognition highlights their dedication to public service and acts of kindness that serve as an inspiration to the community, Governor Sophon said.

The life-saving incident occurred near Cherng Talay Shrine on Srisoonthorn Rd. on Jan 6. An elderly man suffered a cardiac arrest while riding his ‘samlor’ (motorbike with a sidecart) and collapsed unconscious. Bystanders immediately alerted the Cherng Talay Municipality rescue team, who rushed to the scene with an ambulance.

As rescue workers attempted to revive the man using CPR, an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and other emergency measures, they sought help from bystanders. Among them was Benchawan, who quickly stepped forward and assisted with the life-saving efforts.

Demonstrating composure and skill beyond her years, she performed CPR and administered two shocks with the AED, helping to stabilise the man before he was transported to the hospital.

Benchawan later shared that she had received CPR training two years ago as part of a project organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) at Saphan Hin. Conducted by the Teach for Life Association and Guardians of Life Co Ltd, the programme equipped students with essential life-saving skills.

“I’m so happy that I could help save his life,” Benchawan said, reflecting on the experience.

The students’ actions have been widely praised by the local community and emergency responders. Their bravery and quick thinking exemplify the importance of emergency training and the impact that prepared individuals can have in critical situations.

Phuket authorities hope that their heroism will inspire more young people to acquire first-aid skills and be ready to assist others in times of need.
