The festival, taking centre stage at Saphan Hin Park, continues through to Jan 6.
Joining Governor Sophon for opening ceremony were dignitaries, officials and members of the public.
Prominent attendees included the Governor’s wife Ms Busadee, who as the Governor’s wife is bestowed the official positions of President of the Phuket branch of the Red Cross Society of Thailand and as President of the Ministry of Interior Housewives’ Association.
Also present were Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong and other high-ranking officials and community leaders.
The annual event, for decades previously called the ‘Red Cross Fair’, aims to showcase Phuket’s cultural richness, promote local tourism and support charitable efforts, said an official report of the official opening.
The annual fair also aims to raise funds for the Phuket chapter of teh Red Cross to carry out community projects to help people in need across the island.
Key features of the fair include:
- Cultural Exhibitions: Showcasing OTOP tourism communities from six villages and community development projects such as the Khok Nong Na initiative and Thai fabric demonstrations.
- Local Cuisine: Daily demonstrations of nine signature Phuket dishes and a Phuket Khanom Jeen Eating Competition on Jan 6.
- Arts and Performances: Cultural shows from the Women’s Development Committee and a Thai fabric fashion show titled ‘Charm of Thai Fabric, Spectacular Thai Fabric’ on Jan 5.
- Marketplace: Exhibitions and sales of local agricultural products, OTOP items and a variety of foods from local and national business operators.
Under the theme ‘Eat with Pleasure, Walk and Travel, Be Happy in Our Home’, the fair combines education, entertainment and economic stimulation, drawing both locals and tourists during the New Year holidays, said the official report.
Governor Sophon emphasised the festival’s role in fostering community spirit and economic growth.
“This event allows the people of Phuket to relax, stimulates the grassroots economy, generates tourism income and provides an opportunity to start the New Year with joy and unity,” he said.
