The event, held from Dec 1-3, 2024, aims to restore the region’s mangrove forests and foster community engagement in environmental preservation.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat officially inaugurated the event, joined by key figures such as Wuttipong Pringkarn, Director of the Phuket Mangrove Resource Management Center; Assoc Prof Dr Sarawut Aree, Director of the Muslim Studies Center at Chulalongkorn University; and Keowkiat Chitkeow, Chief of the Koh Kaew Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor).

Representatives from the Red Cross Society of Phuket Province, local conservation networks and community members were also in attendance.

The initiative, organised by the Laem Hin Coastal Community Conservation Network, chaired by Sumet Bunnon, focuses on restoring the mangrove ecosystem through activities such as releasing crabs back into the sea.

The symbolic effort aims to revitalise the mangrove forest and sustain its role as a crucial environmental resource for future generations, said an official report of the event.

In addition to conservation efforts, the event features a programme of activities, including religious lectures by esteemed speakers, youth activities that encourage religious knowledge and self-expression, and a bustling marketplace with food, clothing and goods from across Phuket.

Proceeds from the event will support ongoing mangrove conservation activities in Laem Hin.

Mr Sumet said the event was hoped to inspire greater community participation in environmental protection while celebrating the cultural and natural heritage of the Laem Hin community.
