‘Phuket Carnival at Patong’ underway

PHUKET: Patong Beach came alive as the ‘Phuket Carnival at Patong’ festival took to the streets with the annual vibrant street parade yesterday evening (Dec 8).

More than 2,000 people took part in the parade, with a host of local tourism attractions and businesses represented by their associates dressed in colourful and striking costumes, and performing demonstrations of Muay Thai and traditional Thai dance.

The 38th edition of the carnival tis year is under the theme ‘Phuket Memories of a Lifetime’. The event marks the official start to Phuket’s tourism high season and aims to position Phuket as a global hub of happiness and fun, drawing tourists from around the world.  

Presiding over the grand opening was Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Minister of Labour, with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat delivering a welcoming speech.

Joining the festivities were Patong Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri, with his sister Deputy Mayor Lalita Maneesri presenting details of the carnival and Patong’s tourism situation. The ceremony was attended by Patong Municipality officials, government leaders, local residents and international visitors.

In his address, Governor Sophon highlighted Phuket’s significant recovery in the tourism sector, noting that the province’s tourism revenue for 2024 is projected to reach approximately B400 billion, comparable to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

He expressed optimism that this figure could rise to B450bn in 2025, emphasising the increasing quality of visitors, which has contributed to higher tourism revenue.  

“This festival serves as a declaration of Phuket’s readiness to welcome tourists and provide an unforgettable experience. Our aim is to ensure visitors return to Phuket time and again,” said Governor Sophon.

Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn underscored the government’s commitment to bolstering the tourism industry.

“Phuket is a prime example of Thailand’s tourism potential. The Ministry of Labour is dedicated to developing a skilled workforce to meet the sector;s demands and promote sustainable tourism,” he stated.

The festivities, which continue along the Patong beachfront through to tomorrow night (Dec 10), include an array of activities such as live performances on the beach stage and a host of local dishes served by local vendors.
