The campaign, organised in collaboration with ’Good Shepherd Phuket Town’ foundation, seeks to raise awareness and foster community action against domestic violence.
The campaign’s opening ceremony, presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai, was held at the Good Shepherd school yesterday (Nov 25).
Attendees included over 200 key figures, including representatives from the Phuket Provincial Prosecutor’s Office, the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court Office, local government agencies and community volunteers.
During his address, Vice Governor Samawit highlighted the urgent need to address the root causes of violence, such as drug abuse, emotional instability and weakened family ties in modern society.
“This campaign is vital for raising awareness about the growing problem of violence, especially towards vulnerable groups like children, women, and the elderly. Through this initiative, we aim to foster understanding and cooperation within the community to combat violence in all its forms,” Mr Samawit said.
Sompit Srikhamhaeng, Director of the Social Development and Human Security Phuket office, reported a significant rise in domestic violence cases in Phuket ‒ from 32 reported incidents in 2022 to 66 in 2024.
She attributed the increase to recurring issues such as substance abuse and a lack of emotional control. The November campaign, she added, is designed to promote a societal rejection of violence and encourage preventive measures.
Sister Lakana Sukhsuchit, Director of the Good Shepherd Phuket Town foundation, emphasised the organisation’s role in creating a space of love, respect and dignity for all, particularly for women and children who have experienced injustice.
“Real change begins with collective action at both the community and societal levels,” she said.
The campaign also forms part of a nationwide movement to build a safe and violence-free society. Participants engaged in knowledge-sharing sessions, listened to expert insights and collectively affirmed their commitment to ending violence, said an official report of the event.
