The issue arose after a Facebook post by the page ‘E-Jee Jum Phuket’ showcased decorations in the terminal featuring Sino-Portuguese architectural images from Singapore.
The post sparked confusion, with some questioning why images from abroad were used in a terminal located in Phuket, a region known for its own Sino-Portuguese heritage ‒ a fact heavily promoted by government tourism agencies, including the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
In a statement, AoT Phuket explained that the images are part of a broader effort to decorate the terminal with Sino-Portuguese architecture themes, a style that is deeply connected to Phuket’s cultural identity.
AoT Phuket emphasised that the images aim to create a welcoming and atmospheric environment for passengers and are consistent with the architectural style found locally in Phuket.
“We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding this may have caused,” the statement read. “Phuket Airport will take steps to address the issue and make any necessary corrections.”
The airport reiterated its commitment to promoting Phuket’s tourism image and fostering sustainable community engagement under the guiding principle of being a “Corporate Citizenship Airport”.
“By celebrating the unique cultural heritage of the region, Phuket Airport aims to balance its role as a key transportation hub with its dedication to being a responsible community partner,” AoT Phuket said.
