Patong, Mai Khao confirm tsunami remembrance services

PHUKET: Patong Municipality and the Mai Khao Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor) have now both confirmed that they will be holding remembrance services to honour those killed in the tsunami that struck Phuket’s shores 20 years ago.

The confirmation follows The Phuket News report yesterday (Dec 23). highlighting that there had been no public announcements by any local offices saying there would be holding tsunami remembrance services in Phuket to mark 20 years since the Indian Ocean Tsunami.

The officials called by The Phuket News also declined to confirm any remembrance events for Thursday.

Today, Weerawit Kreuasombat, President of the Patong Entertainment Business Association (PEBA) and also Assistant to Patong Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri, called to The Phuket News to confirm that Patong Municipality will be holding a flower-laying ceremony and observing a minute’s silence on Patong Beach, near the Bangla Police Box, at 9am on Thursday

Similarly, Mai Khao OrBorTor has also now confirmed that it will be holding ist traditional multi-faith memorials service at the ‘Wall of Remembrance’ at Mai Khao Cemetery, starting at 9:30am.

The ‘Wall of Remembrance’ ceremony will also observe one minute’s silence to remember the people from 45 countries who lost their lives that fateful day 20 years ago.

Of note, as of time this article was posted online, Patong Municipality and Mai Khao OrBorTor had both yet to post any public announcements online confirming they will be holding tsunami remembrance services this year.

The Phuket News was told by one source that Kamala OrBorTor will be holding tsunami memorial services to mark 20 years since the disaster.

However, Prawee Rattana, the Chief Administrative Officer (Palad) at Kamala OrBorTor, confirmed directly to The Phuket News today that his office will not be holding any tsunami memorial events this year.
