Patong gears up for annual carnival festival

PHUKET: Patong Municipality is asking people to avoid the main roads at southern end of Patong and the Patong beach road (Thaweewong Rd) on the evening of Friday, Dec 19 as, the annual parade of the now-branded ‘Phuket Carnival’ is held to mark the official start of the tourism high season.

The parade will begin at the southern end of Phra Metta Rd and make its traditional route along Prachanukroh Rd towards Patong Beach, where it will continue along the beach road to the beach end of Bangla Rd ‒ where the main festivities will be held during the three-day carnival.

The roads are expected to remain closed to normal traffic from 5pm to 8pm while the parade is taking place.

Patong Municipality has announced that this year’s carnival, the 39th year the event has been held, will be held from Dec 19-21, with festivities starting at 5pm each day.

The festival will feature a market zone, zumba dance, the annual parade, cabaret performances, an Ariel show, beach yoga, a fire show, the annual beach volleyball tournament and close with the traditional fireworks display.

The artists to perform at this year’s carnival, which is being held under the theme ‘Where Dreams Come Alive’, have been confirmed’

At the ‘Patong Paradise’ concert stage area will host a variety of musicians and DJs performing for the large crowds that gather each night, including the following: Queen on Street, Gypsy Sun, Songkarn Rangsan, Green Light Band, Olympus, Gypsy Sun, Morning Eating, Maw Meow. 

“Although the nation is observing the passing of the Queen Mother, the parade and concert will still go ahead as planned, with a moment of silence included in her honour,” Patong Mayor Lalita Maneesri told The Phuket News.

“The traditional procession and performances will continue as before, and an additional exhibition will be set up to showcase the Queen Mother’s royal duties,” she added.
