Mueang Phuket District Chief Pairoj Srilamul presided over a community forum held at the village on Thursday (Feb 20), joined by Rawai Deputy Mayor Thiraphong Thaodaeng* as well as government officials, local leaders, and community representatives.
During the forum, Mr Pairoj emphasised the government’s commitment to tackling drug-related issues through a comprehensive approach that involves all sectors of society, said an official report of the event.
The strategy aligns with national policies aimed at eliminating drugs from Thai communities by differentiating between drug users and traffickers.
The approach focuses on rehabilitating drug users through effective treatment programs, helping them reintegrate into society and the workforce, Mr Pairoj said.
Meanwhile, those involved in drug production and distribution face strict legal consequences, he warned.
To address the ongoing drug challenges in Rawai and Chalong, the Muang Phuket City Drug Prevention and Suppression Operation Center has formed a dedicated working group, Mr Pairoj also explained.
The sea gypsy community in Rawai, as a densely populated area with narrow alleys that pose enforcement challenges, has been particularly affected, he said.
Mr Pairoj raised concerns over drug networks exploiting children, youth and women to distribute or use drugs, exacerbating social and educational issues.
Recognising the complexity of these challenges, the forum underscored the need for a holistic approach that integrates various social, economic and legal measures.
Key areas of focus included education, employment, income generation, social stability, housing conditions and informal debt resolution, alongside drug prevention initiatives.
As part of the provincial government’s urgent agenda, an action plan has been developed for the 2025 fiscal year to guide coordinated efforts among government agencies, Mr Pairoj said.
“The plan aims to produce measurable results in improving the quality of life and safety within the Rawai sea gypsy community,” he added.
The collaborative effort is hoped to lead to lasting changes, ensuring a healthier and more secure environment for the residents of Rawai, he concluded.
