The notice, released this morning (Feb 23), emphasises that Makha Bucha is a significant day in Buddhism, during which the sale of alcohol is prohibited across all channels.
The 24-hour ban on alcohol sales will begin just after midnight tonight (00:01 am on Saturday, Feb 24) and will end at midnight tomorrow (11:59 pm, Saturday, Feb 25).
Although the Royal Thai Police did not specifically mention designated entertainment zones, it was clearly indicated that the ban encompasses all retail and wholesale operations.
Therefore, night venues in designated entertainment zones should avoid selling alcohol after midnight but may remain open until 4am as part of a pilot project aimed at boosting tourism.
Patong Municipality went further and clearly stated that bars, restaurants and hotels are no exception from the alcohol sale restriction.
According to Thai law, the sale of alcohol is forbidden on five specific religious days: Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha Day, Khao Pansa, and Wan Org Pansa.
Violators of the ban risk facing up to six months in prison, a fine of up to B10,000, or both.
Though not encouraged, alcohol consuption on Makha Bucha is not prohibited if the drinks have been bought in advance within legal hours, namely from 5pm till midnight today (Feb 23).
