New Phuket airport bus services to launch by end of year

PHUKET: An agreement between Airports of Thailand (AoT) and state-run bus operator The Transport Co ‒ better known by its Thai initials ‘BorKorSor’ (บขส) ‒ will see new bus services from Phuket International Airport launched before the end of the year.

BorKorSor Acting President Atthawit Rakjamroon explained through a statement issued yesterday (July 9) that the new initiative is to provide buses directly from three airports operated by AoT: Suvarnabhumi Airport; Don Mueang Airport; and Phuket Airport.

The initiative is the result of talks with AoT President Kerati Kijmanawat. The move is touted to be in line with the government’s policy to stimulate the tourism economy in main cities, secondary cities and throughout the country, Mr Atthawit said.

AoT will support the initiative by setting up ticket sales points, conducting public relations promotions and providing the bus parking areas.

The buses will provide transport from the airports to main city provinces, tourist provinces, and secondary provinces, including Pattaya, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Nakhon Ratchasima, Hua Hin, and Prachuap Khiri Khan, according to the release.

Additionally, the BorKorSor is planning to arrange more transport buses along "feeder" routes from the airport to various provinces, the statement said.

Mr Atthawit mentioned that AoT has suggested to BorKorSor to add routes from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak in Phang Nga Province.

"This is because locals and tourists want better travel connections," he said.

"Currently, traveling is quite expensive. Public buses would provide more options, increase convenience and reduce travel costs. The BorKorSor has received suggestions for further actions," he added.

The BorKorSor will create a detailed plan for ticket sales points in all three airports and determine feeder routes connecting the airports to reach a conclusion quickly, the announcement said.

The new bus routes are expected to be operational within this year, it added.
