According to the advisory, reissued today (June 7), a strong southwest monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea and coastal provinces, bringing widespread rain and the risk of flash floods and overflows. Areas expected to be most affected include Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun.
The department urged residents and tourists to remain vigilant, as the accumulated rainfall could lead to hazardous conditions.
Wind waves in the Andaman Sea are forecast to reach heights of two to three metres, and potentially exceed three metres in areas experiencing thunderstorms.
Marine operators are advised to proceed with extreme caution, particularly in storm-affected zones. Small boats are strongly advised to remain ashore throughout the advisory period.
“This is a severe weather situation, and people should stay tuned to further updates and follow safety instructions,” said Wirote Lewcharoenthrarp, Director of the Southern Meteorological Center (West Coast), based near Phuket International Airport.
Meanwhile, the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command has warned that intense downpours have increased risk of flash floods, runoff, flooding and mudslides, especially in flood-prone areas, urban zones with poor drainage and natural attractions such as caves and waterfalls.
The Phuket Disaster Center asks residents and tourists to stay updated by closely following official announcements from the Southern Meteorological Center.
