Millions of baby crabs released into Phuket mangroves

PHUKET: In a bid to help the local ecosystems replenish to health levels, Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong on Friday (July 20) led an event in Mai Kho to release millions of baby crabs into the mangroves.

The event, held amid the mangrove forest near the Phuket Sirinath Marine National Park Operations Centre 2 in Mai Khao, got underway at 11am.

At the event, Governor Norrapat was joined by the heads of local government agencies as well as fisheries officials and youngsters, altogether totalling more than 100 people.

The “release of sea animals” was organised by the Phuket Fishery Office and members of a local fishery network to restore the richness of nature, increase the number of sea animals in the area, improve the quality of life of local residents, support the community to join resource administration and promote ecotourism, said a release by the Phuket office of the Public Relations Department.

In in total, the event saw the release of 20,000 sea bass fingerlings, 250 horse crabs, 300 sea crabs and a claimed 6.4 million baby horse crabs.
