Phuket City Police confirmed that officers were called to the house in Soi Hatchananiwet 2/10, Talat Yai, Mueang Phuket District, at about 1:05pm.
The deceased was identified as Boonchuay Muangsunthon, who lived at the address with his daughter, Ms Chalada, 52, and her daughter.
Ms Chalada told police she had left the house at about 9am after preparing food for her father, returning shortly before 1pm. On her return she found Mr Boonchuay had hanged himself from a mango tree inside the front yard of the property. She and her daughter immediately brought him down and called the emergency services.
Officers arrived with a forensic doctor and confirmed Mr Boonchuay had died at the scene. There were no signs of a struggle or assault.
Police reported that Mr Boonchuay had long suffered from coronary artery disease and an enlarged prostate, and had been under stress. Relatives said he may also have taken an overdose of sleeping pills.
From the initial examination, the doctor estimated he had died less than two hours before police arrived.
The family told police they did not suspect foul play. The body was taken for autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
Phuket City Police noted further action will follow pending the autopsy report.
