Kelantan state police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said 128 illegal riverside jetties from Tumpat to Rantau Panjang will soon be demolished after the plan had obtained approval from the state government, Bernama reported yesterday (Aug 11).
Tumpat is opposite Tak Bai district and Rantau Panjang opposite Sungai Kolok district, both in Narathiwat province, reports the Bangkok Post.
“The demolition of these jetties is expected to completely eliminate the use of illegal routes in the area and help prevent cross-border criminal activities,” Yusoff was quoted as saying.
The demolition cost is estimated at between 2,000 and 5,000 ringgit (between B15,000 and B38,000).
Kelantan state has campaigned against human trafficking, contraband and other crimes. Malaysian security authorities suspect triads use unapproved jetties in the river as entry and exit points between the two countries.
