Lt Gen Boonsin delivers ‘Thai DNA’ speech in Phuket

PHUKET: Thousands of Phuket residents gathered at the Phuket Merlin Hotel yesterday (Nov 11) to join a special event headlined by Lt Gen Boonsin Phadklang, widely known as ‘Capt Goong’, a former Commander of the 2nd Army Region and current advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army.

The event marked the first time in Phuket’s history that such a large crowd had assembled to collectively express devotion to the three pillars of Thai identity, in a powerful display of unity and loyalty to the nation, religion and monarchy, said an official report of the occasion.

The ceremony began with the raising of the national flag as attendees sang the anthem with pride, filling the venue and even the second-floor balcony.

Lt Gen Boonsin was warmly welcomed by local leaders, students and residents, shaking hands with the crowd before receiving a sacred Luang Por Chaem statuette from Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) President Rewat Areerob as a token of respect.

Before beginning his lecture, Lt Gen Boonsin led a 93-second moment of silence to express condolences to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother, moving many in attendance.

He then delivered his keynote address titled ‘Thai DNA: Heart for the Country’, in which he underscored the enduring importance of the nation, religion, and monarchy as the stabilising pillars of Thai society. “The Thai flag we hold today has profound meaning, and it is our duty to uphold it together,” he said.

He explained that the red in the flag represents the people, who must live with morality and ethics; the white stands for the purity of religion, which anchors the mind and guides right action; and the blue symbolises the monarchy ‒ the strongest band at the centre ‒ representing His Majesty’s steadfast support and dedication to the Thai people.

“The monarchy is the core that holds all colours together,” he said. “Love and unity are the heart of the Thai people. Don’t be easily deceived by information on social media. Even if it comes from someone close, always verify first.”

Lt Gen Boonsin also encouraged the youth to see themselves as the “taproot” sustaining the nation’s institutions, urging them to ask questions and seek understanding to continue building Thailand’s future.

Mr Rewat praised the event as an unprecedented moment for Phuket. “Today marks the first time in our province’s history that citizens from every sector have come together as one, driven by love for the nation, religion and monarchy,” he said.

He explained that the gathering had been planned since October, following Lt Gen Boonsin’s retirement on Sept 30.

“Even in retirement, he continues to serve the nation. When I met him, I told him Phuket is the living room of Thailand ‒ our island generates enormous income and supports livelihoods across the country. More than 90% of our people work in tourism, yet they remain deeply devoted to the nation, religion and monarchy.”

Mr Rewat dismissed rumours that Lt Gen Boonsin would cancel his trip, saying, “He has never once postponed a commitment. His presence here today shows his sincerity.”

He added that the large turnout, particularly from students, reflected the strong sense of national identity among the younger generation. “The participation of so many youths in the ‘Thai DNA: Heart for the Country’ lecture shows how important these values remain in Thai society,” he said.

The event concluded with the singing of the national anthem and a resounding round of applause from the audience.

“On behalf of the people of Phuket,” Mr Rewat said in closing, “I would like to express our deepest gratitude to Lt Gen Boonsin for honouring us with this special lecture. We hope to welcome him back to Phuket again next year.”
