Saturday 14 December 2024 02:00 PM
When the trailer for ‘The Lord of The Rings: The War of the Rohirrim’ first dropped it seemed to divide cinema fans. Some saw it as a way to once again delve into the magical world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, while others seemed worried about the fact of whether or not this story would lend itself to the Anime style correctly.

When ‘Moana’ hit cinemas in 2016 neither Disney or the world knew what was about to hit them. Disney had an instant hit on their hands while children around the globe suddenly had a fan favourite family film. A film that you would have to say competes rather well alongside ‘Frozen’ as perhaps the most popular family film of this generation.

When Matt Reeves’ film ‘The Batman’ hit cinemas screens in 2022, not only were people impressed by the performance of Robert Pattinson as ‘The Caped Crusader’, but they were also stunned by Colin Farrell portraying the villainous Oz (aka ‘The Penguin’) in such a way many thought he possibly should have had more success at Awards time.
‘Wicked’ not woeful, but still not spellbinding

The classic ‘The Wizard of Oz’ has always held a special place in my heart. Alongside ‘The Sound Of Music’ it is one of the earliest films that I can remember my mother letting me watch as a child when it used to screen on TV.
‘Gladiator II’ could have made history

Saturday 16 November 2024 02:00 PM
There is no doubt that Ridley Scott’s 2000 film ‘Gladiator’ is a cinematic masterpiece. If winning five Oscars and having countless actors and filmmakers admit over the years that it is their favourite film is not enough to prove that, then the fact that it still has the power to mesmerize and wow audiences some 24 years later certainly is.
‘Red One’ delivers a very special Christmas treat

Saturday 9 November 2024 02:00 PM
It hasn’t taken very long into this Christmas period to find a film that is guaranteed to become a Christmas classic. Starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, ‘Red One’ takes the action genre and mixes it with mythological and a splash of comedy and the result is very special.
‘The Apprentice’ puts young Trump on show

Saturday 2 November 2024 02:00 PM
With the US Presidential election hotting up now seems to be a good time to take a look at controversial brand-new film ‘The Apprentice’. Whether this film is an accurate portrayal of a young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan – Captain America: Winter Soldier) or whether it is a media beat-up designed to discredit a Presidential candidate all seems to come down to what side of politics you support.

One of the thrills of sitting down to a Marvel movie these days is that anticipation to see whether as a production company they have learnt from recent mistakes. As their Box Office takings have plummeted over the past few years people have been pretty vocal online as to why.
Smile, and Halloween horror smiles at you

Saturday 19 October 2024 11:00 AM
With Halloween fast approaching it is no surprise that Hollywood is pumping out horror movies at an alarming rate. Next off the block is ‘Smile 2’, the follow-up to 2022’s surprise box office hit.
‘The Substance’, highlighting the horror of self-image

Body horror is not a new genre of film, but it certainly is one of the most extreme. Films like ‘The Blob’ and ‘The Fly’ (even its 1980s remake) are considered classics and while directors like David Cronenberg have always tried to make intelligent body horror films it feels like the new breed of filmmakers use it for shock factors rather than social commentary.

The problem with making a brilliant film is where do you go from there? Do you leave it as a stand-alone piece of cinematic brilliance, or do you try to expand on what you have created. That is the question that filmmaker Todd Phillips was left with after the success of ‘Joker’ back in 2019.
Animated ‘Transformers One’ gets it right

Saturday 28 September 2024 02:00 PM
If you grew up in the ’80s or ’90s then there is a strong chance that you were an avid ‘Transformers' watcher as a kid. You probably even had the toys as well. Then after various seasons of the animated television Transformers series, Michael Bay took the risk and brought the Autobots and the Decepticons to the big screen with a film that people either seemed to love or hate.

Saturday 21 September 2024 02:00 PM
‘Megalopolis’ is not just a film, it is one man’s cinematic dream. This is not a film that most would predict would become a box office bestseller – no, this is a passion project for a director that has had it burning away inside him now for nearly 50 years.
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ a spectre of its former self
Phuket Life

Saturday 14 September 2024 01:45 PM
‘Beetlejuice’ is a film that almost happened 30 years ago. Hot after the success of the first film, director Tim Burton was keen to do a follow-up – but then it all got put on the backburner when himself and his leading man Michael Keaton were asked to join the Batman universe.

Saturday 7 September 2024 02:00 PM
Among the big blockbusters and darker films in cinemas at the moment there is a new film this week that has a freshness and comedic edge to it. You shouldn’t think that the new South Korean film ‘Pilot’ is just all laughs though, because the film also takes a fair swipe at current day business procedures as well.

A lot of different filmmakers have tried to recapture the magic of the 1994 film ‘The Crow’. Many film lovers concur that director Alex Proyas’s original film, based on the popular comic book series, is the perfect melancholic Gothic film.

The ‘Alien’ franchise just keeps giving. From the trend-setting original film from 1979 through to the deadly serious ‘Prometheus’ and the simply action-fuelled Alien vs Predator films, this is a franchise that has never been afraid to try new things.
‘Borderlands’ not as bad as reviews suggest
Phuket Life

Sunday 18 August 2024 11:00 AM
There is a strong chance that you have heard about ‘Borderlands’ by now. It is the latest film by the legendary Eli Roth (Hostel) and it has achieved infamy by having one of the lowest Rotten Tomato scores of 2024 – as I write this it is currently sitting on 10%.
‘It Ends with Us’ bold, compelling

Sunday 11 August 2024 11:00 AM
‘It Ends with Us’ may just well be one of the most surprising films of 2024. If you haven’t read the novel it is based on, then on the surface this looks like it could be a nice romantic drama that would be perfect for day-time television. But looks can be deceiving and that is certainly the case here when the film ends up showing its final hand.
‘Fly me to the Moon’ more fun than historical

The moon landing – did it happen or was it staged? It’s hard to imagine that when I went to high school, okay a little longer ago than I care to admit, it was simply taught that the moon landing did happen. Today we find ourselves in a world where a growing number of people believe that what is considered a pivotal event in world history may have in fact been staged.
