The event, held under the ‘30+ Island Clean Up: So Cool Mission 2025’ campaign, was organised by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) and the Phuket Racha Islands Protected Area Management Center.
The cleanup was held as part of activities marking World Coral Reef Day, observed around the world yesterday (June 1).
The event was also held in advance as part of the activities marking World Oceans Day, to be observed this Sunday (June 8).
The cleanup yesterday saw a total of 70 participants take part, including 20 volunteer divers and 50 local business operators and conservation network members.
Rubbish collected included plastic and glass bottles, foam, ropes, tires and discarded fishing gear ‒ 1,229kg from the beach and 256kg from underwater areas offshore.
All waste was brought ashore and handled according to proper disposal procedures, noted a report of the event by DMCR
The effort aimed to protect coral reefs, raise awareness about marine conservation and support eco-friendly tourism, the DMCR added.
At the event, officials highlighted the importance of community participation in restoring marine ecosystems, the report concluded.
