During the robbery attempt, the man had clamped his hands around the currency exchange staffer’s throat and started strangling her. The man fled when people started to arrive in response to the woman’s previous calls for help.
Patong Police announced through a post online earlier today that they had arrested a 26-year-old Israeli man for the crime. The man was arrested yesterday (Jan 22). The report did not disclose the man’s name.
Officers had tracked down the man through CCTV and followed his route of escape from the scene until they could confirm his identity, Patong Police explained.
The man was taken to Patong Police Station and charged with attempted robbery at night, assaulting another person causing physical or mental harm, and illegally staying in the country after his permit to stay had expired.
The man admitted that was in the area at the time and attempted to steal from the currency exchange booth, but denied causing any physical harm and denied the charge of robbery at night, Patong Police noted.
“Authorities have handed over the accused to continue legal proceedings,” the Patong Police report concluded.
