The man, identified by Central Investigation Bureau (CIB).police only as ‘Mr Natthaphong’, was intercepted by Highway Police officers while trying to evade a checkpoint on Phetkasem Rd in Ao Luek District, Krabi.
The arrest was made during a routine security operation aimed at maintaining safety in southern tourist areas, the CIB reported.
According to police, Natthaphong was driving a pickup truck and appeared visibly nervous when signalled to stop. He instead attempted to speed away, prompting officers to block his vehicle and conduct a search.
Inside the truck, police found one .40-calibre semi-automatic pistol, 25 rounds of ammunition and a black leather holster.
Natthaphong told officers he was heading to Phuket.
He reportedly also confessed to possessing the weapon illegally and confessed that he had never held a gun licence.
Natthaphong also reportedly told officers he intended to carry the weapon for self-defence, citing past conflicts with rival youth groups as his motivation.
Natthaphong was taken into custody, and all items were handed over to Ao Luek Police Station for further legal proceedings. He faces charges relating to the unauthorised possession of a firearm and ammunition.
