King Chulalongkorn, or Rama V, is remembered by all Thais as Phra Piya Maharaj – the Great Beloved King.

The national public holiday commemorates the achievements of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) on the anniversary of his death in 1910.

The fifth king of the Chakri Dynasty, King Chulalongkorn is considered one of the greatest monarchs of Siam as he led several major reforms in Thailand, from the Thai educational system and military affairs to the abolition of slavery in Thailand and the implementation of European-style currency.

To commemorate the special day, Thais show their respect by placing wreaths and flowers at Rama V statues in their hometowns.

Officials organise a variety of formal activities for the auspicious occasion, including giving alms to monks, offering of wreaths in front of a statue of Rama V, candle-lit ceremonies at sunset.

All government offices will be closed on the day to honour the occasion, including Phuket Immigration, the Employment Office, the Land Transport Office and all three District Offices in Phuket.

All main bank branches will close, but branches in shopping centres will remain open.

All Royal Thai Police and Tourist Police stations will remain open, and some local consulates will remain open to serve their respective citizens.

There is no ban on the sale of alcohol on this holiday.
