Governor Sophon will present a comprehensive report to the prime minister of the June 30 floods along with proposed measures to prevent and address “mudslides” across the region, said an official report of the meeting.
At the meeting, Governor Suwannarat noted that assistance for disaster victims has been organised according to relevant regulations and criteria.
The disaster affected two districts, Kathu and Thalang, encompassing seven subdistricts, 44 villages, and four communities, with a total of 2,087 households.
The local administrative organisations allocated B14,215,748 for livelihood assistance, adhering to the Ministry of Interior’s regulations on disaster relief funds, said the report.
An aerial survey of high-risk areas throughout Phuket focusing on Kamala, where PM Srettha visited early last month, identified critical zones to implement preventative measures and provide assistance, ensuring the safety of residents from potential mudslides, the report noted.
Governor Suwannarat emphasised the importance of these measures to safeguard the community and enhance disaster preparedness throughout Phuket, the report said.
According to the official itinerary of PM Srettha’s visit today, Mr Srettha is to arrive at the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center at Cape Panwa at 11:10am for a meeting on mudslide prevention and to observe rare marine animal rescue operations at the Sireetarn Marine Endangered Animals Rescue Centre.
At 1pm the PM will visit Wat Chaiyathararam (Wat Chalong) for a religious ceremony.
At 2:30pm, the PM will visit the Kudo Hotel & Beach Club in Patong to view an exhibition for the royal Phuket Sandbox beach conservation project, highlighting the model for Thai beach conservation and initiatives to improve tourist safety and crime prevention.
The Prime Minister’s itinerary is subject to change as needed, the schedule noted.
Governor Suwannarat emphasised the importance of the PM’s visit, stating, "The Prime Minister’s visit is a follow-up to the measures initiated to address the mudslide problems that caused significant distress. The government has prioritised both short-term and long-term solutions to prevent future incidents and improve the well-being of local residents.
“Additionally, the Prime Minister will assess the Phuket Sandbox project, which aims to elevate Phuket’s tourism sector under the IGNITE TOURISM THAILAND vision. This initiative is crucial for attracting tourists and hosting major events in 2025, designated as the year of tourism,” he added.
