The directive followed the Central Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center’s latest weather announcement, predicting heavy rainfall and strong sea conditions in the Phuket area.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an advisory warning of heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand, particularly in Phuket, as well as strong waves in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand from today through Tuesday (Sept 13-17).
The southwest monsoon affecting the region is expected to strengthen, bringing waves as high as two to three metres in the Andaman Sea, with even higher waves in thunderstorm areas.
Key concerns highlighted in the directive include potential flash floods, forest runoff, mudslides, and flooding, as well as hazardous sea conditions.
Local authorities have been instructed to monitor weather and rainfall, and stay updated on weather conditions, particularly in areas with a history of flooding or those with accumulated rainfall.
They have also been instructed to:
- Close off natural tourist attractions if conditions become dangerous, and block roads or tunnels that become flooded. The public should also be alerted to electrical dangers in flooded areas.
- Issue warnings to the public about strong winds and waves, and prohibit swimming. Boat operators are advised to navigate with caution, with potential restrictions on sailing if conditions worsen.
- Increase water drainage efforts, particularly in areas at risk of river overflows or flash floods. Additional water pumps will be installed as necessary.
- Ensure a 24-hour monitoring system for high-risk areas and provide early warnings for flash floods and mudslides. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to move their belongings to higher ground and be prepared to evacuate.
- Residents are encouraged to report emergencies via the local administrative offices or hotlines. Officials are on standby 24 hours a day to provide assistance.
- If disaster strikes, immediate aid will be provided to affected individuals. Local command centres are required to report daily updates to the provincial command centre until the situation stabilises.
In issuing the notice, Deputy Governor Sattha Thongkam, acting on behalf of the Governor, emphasised the need for vigilance and preparedness, ensuring all precautionary measures are in place to protect lives and property in the province.
