The body was discovered by a hotel staff member, who contacted the police at about 7:50am.
Police arrived at the scene along with rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation and a forensic unit from Vachira Phuket Hospital to find the man, dressed in black, hanged by a heavy-duty speaker cable tied to an steel support beam next to stairs on the outside of the building.
It was determined that the man had been dead for at least eight to 12 hours before his body was discovered.
Nearby, officers found a black bag and shoes on the stairs leading to a rooms up stairs in the building.
According to initial reports, people at the resort mentioned seeing the man, who for reasons unexplained was reported to possibly be Russian. Although it was believed the man had rented a room at the resort last week, his identity remains unconfirmed at this time.
The body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for post-mortem examination, while authorities contact the Russian Embassy in the hope of identifying the deceased, and locate his relatives for further arrangements.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
