Phuket International Airport launched the new system for domestic passengers last Friday (Nov 1), and the new biometric system will come into use for international passengers from Dec 1, Phuket airport General Manager Monchai Tanode confirmed.
The new Automated Biometric Identification System is being rolled out at all six airports in Thailand operated by Airports of Thailand (AoT), Mr Monchai said in a release by AoT Phuket.
In addition to Phuket airport, AoT operates Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai and Hat Yai airports.
The system employs advanced facial recognition technology to verify passengers’ identities, creating a smoother experience for travellers at various stages of their journey, Mr Monchai explained.
The new system allows passengers to register in one of two ways: either by notifying airline staff at the check-in counter, who will use a ticket scanner to enter passengers’ data, or by using the airport’s automatic self-check-in machines.
Once registered, passengers’ facial data is securely stored in the form of a ‘Token’ and used solely for the current journey.
“Passengers using this system can skip the traditional ID check at several key points, including automated baggage loading, identification verification, and boarding gates. This eliminates the need to present an ID card, passport, or boarding pass, speeding up the entire airport experience,” he said.
Passengers registering via self-check-in must use a Smart Card ID or passport, while those registering at airline counters may use any government-issued ID recognized by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand.
For minors, compliance with Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) requires parental consent for children under 10 years old, while those over 10 may register independently.
“AoT has pledged to continue enhancing its facilities with modern, efficient technologies to provide a convenient, high-quality travel experience for all passengers,” Mr Monchai said.
