The incident came to light after a disturbing video clip was widely shared on Thai social media platforms earlier today (July 16).

The footage shows the dog in a severely weakened state, barely able to move, with its body completely submerged in soil apart from its head. The caption accompanying the clip read: “What is their heart made of… a foreigner is crazy!! Burying a dog alive! A heartbreaking incident in Rawai.”

The video was recorded by a neighbour and shared with Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee and Rawai Mayor Thames Kraitat, reported Soi Dog Foundation.

Soi Dog members, joined by MP Chalermpong, Mayor Thames, Rawai Municipality officials and officers from the Chalong Police, soon arrived at the residence, in Soi Suksan 1, where they located and dug out the suffering animal.

Municipal officers confirmed that the dog was rescued alive and immediately handed over to the Soi Dog Foundation. The foundation has since taken the animal into its care for emergency medical treatment.

Initial reports indicate that a foreign man living at the property is being questioned over the incident.

Authorities have also taken two other dogs from the same property into protective custody to ensure their welfare. All three animals are currently under observation by veterinarians.

The case has provoked widespread condemnation online, with people expressing horror and sadness. Comments ranged from “How cruel” to “I feel so sorry for her. Please help her.”

Under Thailand’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act B.E. 2557 (2014), those found guilty of abusing or neglecting animals can face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to B40,000, or both.

Rawai Municipality has urged the public to report any suspected cases of animal cruelty to the authorities immediately.

Soi Dog Foundation has appealed for public support and donations to help cover the medical costs of the rescued animals and continue their work in protecting street dogs and cats across the island.

As the investigation continues, local police have asked for cooperation from nearby residents who may have witnessed anything unusual at the property in recent days.
