Officials from the DMCR’s Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center arrived to find the remains of the turtle at the southern end of the beach. The officers had been notified of the remains via the Monsoon Garbage Facebook page.

The report indicated that the remains of a sea turtle had washed ashore. The carcass was in an advanced state of decomposition, the DMCR reported yesterday (June 4).

No external wounds were observed on the turtle, and the internal organs were too decomposed to ascertain the cause of death, the DMCR explained in its report.

DMCR officers identified the carcass as that of a fully grown female green turtle (Chelonia mydas). The turtle’s shell measured 105 centimetres long and 91cm wide. The carcass weighed about 100kg.

The DMCR is hoping that further investigation might reveal the circumstances leading to the turtle’s demise.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about marine life and the health of coastal ecosystems in the region.
