DDPM Phuket on flood watch

PHUKET: The Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket) has launched an urgent operation to address flooding in several areas of Thalang District, and especially Srisoonthorn, following heavy rainfall in the area.

DDPM Phuket Chief Sophon Thongsai reported that the downpours began around 4am yesterday (Aug 19) and continued for several hours, leading to significant water retention and flooding in multiple locations across the district.

The affected areas include particularly in front of the Phuket Provincial Prison, as well as several villages and roads such as Thung Na Khian Rd, Baan Yai-Baan Don Rd and areas near Thalang Technical College.

In response, teams have been deployed to assist the affected communities and coordinate with relevant agencies. Water pumps have been activated to expedite drainage, and efforts are underway to clean roads and remove mud to ensure safe travel for residents and tourists.

The water levels in the area have since decreased and are returning to normal. Local authorities and relevant agencies have been instructed to continue monitoring the situation and remain prepared for any further developments.

DDPM Phuket went on flood watch after heavy rains saw parts of Patong, Kathu, Kamala and Cherng Talay experience flooding on Saturday (Aug 17).

The downpours began early in the morning and continued until about midday. By that time, many areas along the central west coast had suffered flooding.

Areas in Patong affected by flooding included Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd, Sai Nam Yen Rd, Soi Nanai 6, Soi Prabaramee 2, and iIn front of the Paradise Complex.

In Kathu, the Si Kor Intersection and the entrance of Soi Kuan Yang, in front of Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation, also suffered flooding.

In Cherng Talay, flooding affected in front of Surin Plaza, in front of HomePro on Soi 8, in front of Blue Tree Water Park and along Soi Bang Tao 7/2.

Wheil the minor flooding caused concern along the west coast, the rains stopped at about midday, and withni hours the standing flloodwater had drained.

Meanwhile, in Srisoonthorn, Mayor Chalermphon Kerdsap continues to battle recurring floods, and has blamed construction and development as one of the primary causes obstructing natural water runoff.
