Prasop Riangngen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, led a delegation from the Office of Contemporary Art, the Phuket Art Association and partner agencies on an inspection tour yesterday (Nov 9).
The group visited exhibition sites across Kathu and Mueang districts and more than 20 community-linked locations to assess readiness for the international contemporary art festival, which will run from Nov 29 to April 30 next year.
According to Mr Prasop, infrastructure and landscaping works are advancing satisfactorily, supported by strong cooperation between local communities and the private sector.
He confirmed that artist selection for the Biennale has now been finalised, with 65 participating artists representing emerging Thai talents, Phuket-based artists with distinctive styles, and leading international contributors.
Many have already started creating and installing site-specific works designed to showcase art within Phuket’s natural, cultural and architectural landscape, Mr Prasop said, according to an official report of his visit.
Local bodies including municipalities, OrBorTor offices, community organisations, private-sector partners and tourism operators have joined forces to prepare venues, promote the event and facilitate visitors. Mr Prasop noted that their combined efforts will help ensure the Biennale delivers tangible benefits to Phuket’s grassroots economy.
Positioned as a major platform to elevate Phuket as a regional hub for international contemporary art, the Thailand Biennale is expected to boost cultural value, inspire the next generation of creatives and generate sustained tourism income over its five-month duration, the official report said.
